Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a behavioral disorder that is characterized by an individual’s inability to regulate their emotions. While typically diagnosed in children, ODD can develop in later years and will continue into adulthood if not diagnosed or treated, often resulting in disruptive behavioral and interpersonal issues that may affect daily life.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) in adults manifests through three main symptoms. First, there is abnormally persistent anger and irritability, which can lead to frequent outbursts, constant resentment toward others, and a preoccupation with insignificant issues.

Second, individuals may exhibit argumentative behavior and a refusal to comply with rules, particularly when dealing with authority figures. Third, excessive vindictiveness may be present, often including an inability to resist revenge-seeking impulses toward those perceived as having caused harm or upset.

Additionally, Mission Connection says that many of the factors that can make an individual more predisposed to ODD may also lead to the development of other mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, and ADHD, making recovery difficult without professional care. For this reason, the treatment center has developed specialized ODD programs that can be tailored to each case, regardless of its complexity.

At Mission Connection’s intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programs, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the main therapeutic modalities offered to adults with ODD, as research has shown that it is particularly effective at addressing and correcting unhealthy thinking patterns. Depending on the case, other evidence-based treatments may be recommended, many of which are available both in person and online through the company’s telehealth platform.

Patients will also be taught to reframe negative thoughts on their own, allowing them to manage their emotions outside of treatment. Mission Connection’s staff can provide additional guidance on other coping strategies, including eliminating stress factors, prioritizing social connections, and practicing mindfulness.
