About Dr. Angela Boyer
Dr. Boyer was drawn to her field because of her childhood around beef and equine operations, which she got from her mother's side of the family. Though she always wanted to work with animals, she wasn't interested in being a veterinarian. When she researched animal nutritionists, she was excited by this prospective career path.
After earning a Bachelor of Science in animal sciences in 2008, Dr. Boyer earned a Master of Science in animal sciences in 2010 from Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. She received a doctorate in animal sciences from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas, in 2013.
Dr. Boyer is of Western Cherokee descent and one of the few women in the industry with multi-species nutrition experience. Animal nutrition is a species-specific and male-dominated field, so she faced many challenges when she began her career. With nearly 15 years of experience, she has gained a significant and broad range of knowledge and skills and can impart valuable resources beyond a single area of specialization. She works diligently to provide a well-rounded methodology for caring for animals.
"It's a unique approach I am trying to bring to the animal nutrition industry in that I am trying to look at it from all aspects of the animal, from their overall health to how nutrition can impact that. Part of that is also making sure that you're properly navigating the producer or pet owner in the right direction. You can't just only focus on what you're going to feed to the animal and think that's going to be the end of it," Dr. Boyer explains.
Making a Difference in Animal Nutrition
Dr. Boyer believes it is important to stress education when dealing with a pet owner or producer. Her tactics depend on the situation she is facing. She strives to make certain that she communicates clearly with the person in charge of the animal and addresses the areas that matter to them, whether it is making sure their pets live as long as possible or ensuring that an animal is profitable.
"I don't feel like a lot of other nutritionists are looking at everything from the person to the pet or the producer to the farm. They're thinking it's only about the animal's diet and nutrition is so much more than that," Dr. Boyer says.
By sharing her viewpoints, passions and knowledge with others, Dr. Boyer serves as the mentor she did not have when she first entered the profession. At the beginning of her career, after several difficult years without a professional support system, she reached out to her colleagues in academia and offered to mentor graduate students entering the field.
A Commitment to Helping Others in Her Field
Dr. Boyer has now mentored ten young professionals who have graduated, with six who have entered the industry. She remains in contact with these mentees and is pleased to say they are thriving. Through this work, she continues her desire to break down feelings of isolation that plagued her as a woman in the industry.
Dr. Boyer has collaborated with several companies to improve their products and practices. She hopes to expand her impact in the future through more of these industry partnerships.
